ABOUT

H.E. Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, EGH is a Kenyan politician, serving as the incumbent governor of the Kakamega County in western Kenya, and the Council of Governors chairperson.
He was elected on 4, March 2013 becoming the first Governor of Kakamega County following promulgation of the Constitution of Kenya in 2010, and subsequently in August 2017, for his second term as governor. He is, therefore, the pioneer Governor of Kakamega County under the devolved system of governance in Kenya that established 47 counties. He was appointed on 14 January 2019 as the Council of Governors of Kenya chairperson.
He was previously Minister of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030 in the government of President Mwai Kibaki.
He was rated as the best Governor for the year 2020 by the Infotrak Research Group.
H.E Wycliffe Oparanya is also the current Orange Democratic Movement Deputy party leader.

EARLY LIFE

Wycliffe Oparanya was born at Emabole in Butere Constituency, Western Kenya on 25 March 1956.
He attended Mabole Primary School, Butere Boys High School, and Kisii High School. He then proceeded to and acquired a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting option) and an MBA (Finance) from the University of Nairobi and is currently in the process of completing his PhD (Economics) at the University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

He is a certified public accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK). He was awarded the prestigious recognition for his contribution to the accounting profession in 2014 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPA). He is also a member of numerous other professional bodies.
Hon. Oparanya has 23 years experience in local and international Finance Management, Audit and Business Consultancy.
Before joining politics in 2002, Oparanya worked at the Kenya Aerotec Ltd. as Chief Financial Controller.

POLITICAL CAREER

Following his time at Kenya Aerotec Ltd, he plunged into politics and successfully captured the Butere parliamentary seat from Mr. Amukowa Anangwe.
He is now member of the Orange Democratic Movement as deputy chair and has represented Butere Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya since the Kenyan parliamentary election, 2007 till “which year”.
Oparanya was among ministers appointed by secondment of then Prime Minister Raila Odinga from The Orange Democratic Movement party after the Raila signed the National Accord Act to form a coalition government with President Kibaki following the disputed 2007 elections. This made him Minister of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030.

POLITICS

Wycliffe Oparaya official threw himself into the political ring in 2002 when he won the Butere Parliamentary seat and went on to retain the seat in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. He was appointed Minister of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030, under the grand-coalition government.
After the promulgation of the new constitution in 2010, Oparanya vied for Governor of Kakamega with ODM and won. He successfully defended the seat again in 2017 with the same party and he is currently serving his last term in office.
Oparanya has declared interest in vying for presidency under the ODM party ticket come 2022.

FAMILY

The Kakamega Governor is married to two wives, Carolyn and Priscilla Oparanya and they are blessed with three children.
